Devin's Birth Story
Our family added it's fourth member on August 18, 2008at 5:34 PM.
We found out in the beginning of January that we would be having another baby. We were all excited, especially Ally who wanted a sister.
In April we found out that Ally would not get the little sister that she wanted. We found out we would be having a little boy. We knew he would be named Devin.
Things were going really well until the last trimester. In the beginning of July I was having so many contractions, which sent us to the hospital. I was there several hours while they monitored me and gave me the terb. shots to stop the contractions. Luckily, it worked and all was well.
At my 33 week appointment, my blood pressure was really high, for the first time in my life. This started another 3 weeks of chaos. I spent that weekend in the hospital while they monitored me and Devin and took tests. They finally sent me home on bedrest.
I told my parents not to come down here to Arizona, I still thought I had 7 weeks left, and wanted them here after he would be born... luckily they are more in tune with my needs then I was and left a few days later on the 900 mile drive.
I was monitored at the doctor's several times a week and things were not getting better. When I was 35 weeks, my doctor said he couldn't wait any longer and we needed the baby to come out. Sierra Vista is a small town and they don't have a large NICU... so he sent us home to pack my bags and drive into Tucson. My parents stayed with Ally and Alex and I drove the 70 miles into Tucson.
When we were at the hospital they did an amnio to test Devin's lung maturity. It was borderline, and we decided to wait it out... which meant another hospital stay for me, but only this time I was in Tucson and very far away from my little one. It was the roughest 3 days of my life.
They sent us home again, and when I went back to my doctor's in Sierra Vista, my blood pressure was the highest it had been... he said his lungs would be mature by now and it was time. Only the stubborn little guy was breech, and that meant c-section. He gave us 2 hours to grab our bags before the c-section would be done.
After that it was complete chaos. We grabbed Ally from school, Alex and my dad gave me a priesthood blessing and we were off to the hospital. The c-section was short (so much shorter than labor...) and he was here by 5:30. Devin's head was caught in my ribs and I swear it felt like they were going to pull a rib out with him. He didn't come out crying, and I have known very little fear that can compare. As they were cleaning him up he only let out a few squeals. They were so worried about him (of course, not as worried as I was), but it turns out he just isn't a crier. Now as horrible as labor was with Ally... I seriously think the pain after the c-section rivals it... and it lasts for WEEKS!
But it was all worth it. Devin was 4 weeks early, but perfectly healthy and did great. He was born at 6 lbs 7 oz and 20 inches long. He had a TON of dark hair and just seemed so tiny.
